What is the Purebred Menorcan Horse like? Find out at Son Martorellet!
Son Martorellet is one of the largest stud farms for Purebred Menorcan horses and mares in Menorca. Located in the municipality of Ferrerias, the estate comprises 14 hectares of natural land dedicated since 1997 to breeding this native breed.
The Menorcan horse has a very long history and is an example of a breed that has been preserved over the centuries. It originates from the southern horses of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a close relative of the Mallorcan horse and the Catalan horse, the latter now extinct.
At Son Martorellet, you will discover the world of Purebred Menorcan horse breeding, how they are cared for and their everyday uses. You will also gain an in-depth understanding of the Son Martorellet estate and the famous “Somni” show.
In 2024, there were more than 3,500 horses spread across the globe: France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Germany and even the United States. Currently, 60% of the horses are registered with stud farms in the Balearic Islands, whereas in 2013 the figure stood at 80%.
Every year, 125 new horses are registered, and there is a breeding programme recognised in many countries. The figures bear witness to the significant expansion the Menorcan breed has experienced in recent years.
