Learn about the history of British Menorca in the 18th century!  

Marlborough Fort is a fortification built by the British in the 18th century. It is an excavation carried out in the rocks in the south of the island of Menorca, in Cala de Sant Esteve. It has impressive underground galleries, and its exhibition will take you back in time. 

It was built by the British between 1720 and 1726. It owes its name to Sir John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, the most prominent British general of the time. The castle of San Felipe and the Stuart (or ‘Penjat’) tower protected Mahón’s port entrance. In 1782 it was partially destroyed by the Spanish and had to be rebuilt, with some modifications, during the last British period (1798-1802). 

It is a small fort with a central heptagonal enclosure that had several artillery pieces to stop possible enemy advances. It was created from a large moat with a counterscarp gallery cut into the rock. From the upper enclosure you can enjoy an exceptional view of the historic area of the port of Mahón, undoubtedly one of the most desirable in the western Mediterranean for the powers of the time. 

Fort of Marlborough is one of the most important places in the struggle between Spain, Great Britain and France for the possession of Menorca.
